Calving Symphony

It starts with a thunderous cracking echoing though the bay, ends with a crash, and splash, and completes the show with a large wave causing the floating ice to dance before your eyes. This is how it was, a  symphony.

Alaska Impression Collage

These pictures are from coastal British Columbia and Alaska via the inside passage and into Glacier Bay national park. Alaska is breathtaking with a rugged coastline and varied weather.

Even in the summer the weather can rapidly change from warm sun to icy winds and from clear skies to overcast and fog. Each has its beauty and when the sun breaks that’s when the scenery is at its best.

This picture collage is my impression (from many hundreds of photos) of Alaska. Click the photo to enlarge. Besides the rugged landscape, sounds of the ocean, winds and birds remain. If I were to pick two highlights they would include the scenic White Pass train ride up the 1897 gold rush route and the Glacier Bay National Park.

Pileated Woodpecker

I took this photo on March 24, 2013. The woodpecker is chipping away at this wood tier by a pond searching for insects, ants and larvae. It frequents dead trees by coastal mudflats of Burrard Inlet in Vancouver, Canada.  In the Pacific Northwest it makes its home in forests by creeks, rivers and coastal forests.  Learn more about it  at the Wikipedia site
