Tribute to Emily Carr ***

This is an Emily Carr painting I imitated to better understand her perception of colour, movement and light. I also enjoyed Emily Carr’s journal “Hundreds of Thousands” . As she walked the forests of coastal British Columbia, one gets a sense of how she perceived the landscape. It’s a combination of light, the forest canopy, the sky, the colours and other attributes of nature she felt. Emily Carr was an extraordinary Canadian with a phenomenal visual vocabulary. She wrote:

“It is wonderful to feel the grandness of Canada in the raw, not because she is Canada but because she's something sublime that you were born into, some great rugged power that you are a part of”
